At the bottom of the world on the Antarctic continent, in distant Marie Byrd Land, Mount Luyendyk overlooks the wide Balchen Glacier. It formed the backdrop for a small, lonely camp of six scientists, the central people in Mighty Bad Land. In January 2016, the US Board on Geographic Names awarded the naming of the summit for the author, Bruce Luyendyk. The vetting included reviews by the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Department of State, the Department of Defense and a few other US agencies.
