Bruce Luyendyk

Bruce P. Luyendyk, professor (emeritus) at the University of California Santa Barbara, remained active in international Antarctic research for 25 years. He was responsible for two expeditions and was principal investigator for five marine geophysical expeditions focusing on the Ross Sea area. His cumulative research, findings, and publications have significantly increased scientific knowledge in Antarctica. Bruce received formal education in geophysics, a branch of geology, and in oceanography. While an undergraduate, just nineteen years old, he took a six-month leave to participate in a deep-sea research voyage to the western and South Pacific. His experiences on this expedition, PROA, the name of a Polynesian sailing canoe, will be the subject of a future memoir.
